MagSpoof on speed hack hotel rooms with ease.
Weston Hecker, a researcher working at Rapid7, has developed a tool that can hack hotel rooms with amazing effectiveness. Hecker’s tool builds on the MagSpoof, a device developed by Samy Kamkar that reads the magstripes from cards. Magstripes are found on many different cards, ranging from credit cards to hotel rooms.
The information stored on hotel room keys typically consists of several data fields, like room number and checkout date. Hecker’s tool identifies the data fields on the key. Knowing this information allows it to guess at the key. The tool is able to run 48 combination in a minute, which will often be enough. After all, the room number is a given, and the range of possible checkout dates is relatively small.
