Hotels woo guests to book directly online with discounts

Seeking to keep online travel agencies from its business, hotels are evolving ways to entice travelers to make their bookings directly

Joining the list of such hotels is Hyatt Hotels Corp, which has announced a discount for direct room bookings on its website. Up to 10 percent of the charges can be saved by members of the Group’s Gold Passport loyalty program in the US, Canada and Australia.

With the affinity between hotels and online travel agencies turning from bad to worse, the former feel that by getting the travelers book rooms directly they can save the commission paid to online travel booking sites. Expedia and Priceline charge a minimum of 15 percent commission.

However, Expedia is of the opinion that online travel agencies offer enormous support to travelers to identify new hotels to make a final call.
