
Thai Hotels Association pushes for better enforcement of the Hotel Act as they want to create a level playing field in the varied Thai lodgings industry. The most important part of the Act is the requirement that rooms in condos, apartment blocks and similar establishments no longer be rented out on a daily basis.
Strict enforcement of this Act will be beneficial for legal accommodations who play by the rules and often lose business to their illegal counterparts as they keep costs low by not sticking to strict regulations.
The enforcement will be carried out by the corruption-tainted Phuket Land Department. It will be interesting to see how successful the department will be in enforcing the law. We can only hope that their effort is more sincere than their past attempts and benefit the minority who do legal business.
