Come October, it’s festival time in Phuket! Yes, from October 1 to 9 thousands of people will throng Phuket to be part of the nine-day Vegetarian Fetival.
Along with announcing the dates for the festival (October 1-9 2016), Phuket Vice Governor Prajiad Aksornthammakul also mentioned about the special prayer ceremony to be conducted honouring HM king Bhumibol Adulyadej.
Some of the major activities marking the festival celebrations include fire-walking and bladder-ladder climbing. The whole of island will stand witness to hundreds of tastefully-decorated stalls that offer a variety of vegan foods.
Noting that fool-proof security arrangements will be in place during the nine-day-long festival, the Vice Governor said people should contribute to public safety, besides protecting themselves from dangerous firecrackers that will be on show.
Jia chai, as the Vegetarian Festival is known in local Chinese parlance, began as early as in 1825, and is one of the important festivals observed in Phuket.
